A variation on the common 'lobster' gloves found for ice climbing and biking, these trekkie mitts are wind protection for bicycling. With an articulated Scotchbrite reflective fabric top shell, they present a reflective, windproof, and waterproof face fabric that takes the brunt of the bicycling headwind (Remember, windchill makes a big difference!). The palms are windproof, but uncoated and very breathable taffeta, and the braking-fingers are completed with a patch of rubberized toughtek fabric which grips the levers in the coldest weather. The wrists are Polartec Powerstretch, at around the 200 weight, and a small strip of wicking lycra fills out the side. With these stretching panels, no velcro cuff is needed. The fingers and thumb are boxed, and the backside of the hand is articulated so that the hands which are constantly wrapped around the handlebar don't compress your choice of insulation. These work great for cold weather cycling (and incidentally anything that needs more dexterity than a mitten), as you can decide on your level of insulation. Today's brands all have a fleece or primaloft packed lobster glove which is just too much in most cases. Eventually, your hand sweats the glove out and you have a soggy towel wrapped around you for the rest of the ride. With a windproof shell, these gloves allow you to wear normal biking gloves in moderate temps, or liner gloves when it gets colder. If it's really frosty, you can throw some fleece gloves under and be cozy as ever.
