2024 started out with a trip to Joshua Tree - mostly for peaks, but some climbing too. Eventually we made our way back to Bishop where I finally got the solar photovoltaic system properly turned on - the CoG (my home, the Church of Grundy) has been mostly running on clean electricity since then with the addition of an electric toaster oven and induction burners. Someone smashed my truck windshield while it was parked in my driveway - I have no idea why, but it did allow me to replace the badly pitted and scratched and now smashed front windshield. In February we took a trip to the Vegas area to climb more peaks and then stuck around the Bishop area rock climbing and biking and hiking lower peaks. In the end of May we did a trip to Death Valley to mainly hike DPS and other peaks.
In June we did a backpacking traverse N-S of the White Mountains from Boundary Peak to the Barcroft gate. It was cold, windy, and the elevation was rough. We followed that up with some peaks in Nevada. Over the July 4th weekend we did a backpacking trip in the Sonora Pass area with a bike shuttle and then more dayhiking of peaks in the area during a heatwave. It was still hot back in Bishop so we tried to get out to higher elevations. Then I drove up to Glacier NP where I met with Chris Kerth and we hiked and climbed a number of peaks including the 6 10,000 footers in the park. The last one Chris had already done so I did it solo in a rainstorm and had a closer grizzly encounter than I liked.
Back in Bishop it was time for the Sierra Challenge - 10 days of peaks (with a bonus day 0) including a few rather long days. As usual it was glorious and exhausting. The weekend after the challenge we did a long dayhike up Wesley and Powell. I still wasn't recovered, nor was I recovered a week later when we did some of the Palisade Traverse on a cold and windy day. I was looking forward to a bit of recovery time when I got the call to do Expedition Oregon - a 6 day adventure race. I got the news Thursday evening, The race started Sunday. Fortunately I was in pretty good shape, unfortunately I was also pre-tired and didn't quite have enough time to get my stuff together and get to the race and also rest up for it. Still, for the most part we did well, although we could have done better with some better navigation in the dark and faster biking and I would have hurt less if I had biked more than about an hour straight in the months before the race.
The week after returning we did another Sierra overnight to climb LeConte and Corcoran - I was still sluggish. There was a bit of relaxing after this - and another trip to Death Valley and Jury Duty and some more recovery. In the beginning of November I headed S for what I thought would be a few weeks. I wouldn't return that year. First up was a trip to Arizona to climb a number of DPS and other peaks that required some technical climbing. We added a 24 hour trip to Mexico to climb Cerro Pinacate. Then back to western Arizona and up to Nevada before returning to California. In December we had a trip to the Anza Borrego area for more peaks and then flew to MA for "second Christmas".
According to Peakbagger I summited 332 peaks in 2024 - there are peaks that aren't included in that total, but also some pretty dubious points. I also rock climbed some 78 days.
