We took another excursion on Feb 1, 2010. This time we rented a scooter to tool around in. This had advantages and disadvantages. We were able to go when and where we wanted to, but we had to know how to get there, and we had to drive too. It took a bit of time to get used to the scooter, but it was a lot easier than a motorcycle because it had automatic transition. The other thing I needed to watch out for was riding on the "wrong" side of the road. It was fun, but also possibly the most dangerous thing we did this trip.
We stopped at a small Wat with a reclining Buddha, then at a nice restaurant where I had a really tasty red curry. Then on to Krabi to run some errands before heading off to Khao Phanom Bencha National Park. It was a longer ride there than we thought it would be, and a few times we weren't sure we were on track. Still, it was nice to ride out in the country. Once we got to the park we hiked up to Huay Tho Waterfall. This was a 7 tier waterfall, but we only went up 4 or so of them. There was also a longer nature trail, but we didn't have enough time to walk it. When we got back to the main road, things were a little hairy with "rush hour" traffic. We stopped off at the Big C grocery store where among other things I got possibly the tastiest ramen soup packs I've ever had.
By the time we got back to Ao Nang and returned the scooter it was past sunset (a very nice one I might add), so rather than wait around in the hopes of more people to show up that wanted a boat ride back to Tonsai, we took a songtheaw to Ao Nam Mao and walked back at a very low tide. This took longer than I wanted with just one headlamp, but wasn't too bad, and ensured that we actually got back without having to pay through the nose for an entire boat trip ourselves. All in all another successful excursion with a few new things.
