Tom Grundy's "killing" Nalumon Page
Somehow on the YogaSlackers TAO tour the joke got started that we were trying to kill Nalumon. Perhaps it was that we kept doing things that were a little (or a lot) outside of her comfort zone - things like longlining, deep water soloing, packrafting, long hikes, and climbing. We also did things that her mom would consider trying to kill her like swimming in the ocean. This page is documenting a few of these failed attempts. Spoiler alert for the squeemish - no Nalumons were killed in the making of this web page, not even one.
Thailand
First we tried to kill her in Thailand...
we made her drive a scooter through hectic traffic in Chiang Mai
Then she agreed to go down to Koh Lanta for more death defying adventures.
we made her walk on treacherous longlines
we forced her to paddle tiny inflatable craft in the vast ocean next to sharp rocks
we made her lie down in the sand and carry hefty people on her feet
we made her flip her wet hair in the sunset
shark-eye view as she floats in the ocean like bait
we trapped her in the blazing sun where she had to pour water on her head to keep cool
we bounced her in the front of a powerboat heading towards a rainbow
we made her climb up cliffs without ropes
There is a little video of her climbing and jumping here:
youtube video of Nalumon deep water soloing and jumping in Thailand
New Caledonia
Obviously her Thai blood was keeping her alive there. So we got her to foolishly join us in New Caledonia where we kept trying....
we tried to punch her in an acro class
we made her snorkel in the pacific with dangerous creatures
we made her dive with sharks (image pulled from video by Raquel)
we made her nap within reach of deadly sea snakes
and land crabs
we sandbagged her into climbing hard steep climbs
we made her carry heavy luggage long distances in the heat and blazing sun
we partially buried her in the sand ...
... while the tide was coming in
we forced her to swim through a cave
we paddled her out to sea in small craft
and made her set up slacklines on razor sharp rocks over the shark infested waters with crazy people
After a full day on the water we made her hike up the highest peak on the island in the dark and sleep on top in the rain to watch the sunrise on the side of a cliff.
it was cold and there were only a few oreos for breakfast
it was horrible
it was so hot on the descent she had to pour water on her head
New Zealand
Yet she still didn't learn and continued with us to New Zealand allowing us plenty more opportunities. Some of them were done sneakily so there isn't any photo documentation. Stuff like delivering scalding hot dangerous liquids (coffee) to her in bed when she really wasn't awake enough to handle them safely or forcing her to eat vast quantities of semi-wild cherries.
we made her paddle tiny inflatable craft in swift icy waters
we forced her to wade through caves
we swung her around on the end of ropes
we tired her out - and ran her ragged
we made her climb chossy rock
we made her climb slippery rocks at Castle Hill
we made her train acro bird pops
we made her do conditioning in the rain
we made her scramble up steep gullies in flip-flops
we sent her high in the trees on cables and other obstacles at the Adrenalin Forest
we painted her skin with toxic chemicals and made her balance on slacklines
we made her hike up into the mountains where we hoisted her into the air in the rain
we attacked her on the trail
we made her risk her fingers grating potatoes
we made her wash dishes at night (like Cinderella her work was never done)
Hawaii
She must be a slow learner because despite barely surviving New Zealand, there she was in Hawaii, she had her own vehicle and was housing elsewhere so she could have avoided us completely, but no...
we made her go to dangerous climbing areas
we made her hike up steep tiring trails
we made her slackline in a dress
we made her stare into the sunset
we made her get up way to early to hike up steep slippery muddy trails in the rain
we made her climb down scary steep peaks
we made her climb up steep scary peaks
we made her pose for pics on top of those peaks
we made her sleep in hammocks
we made her paddle out to sea ...
... and be seared by the sun
... with the wrong equipment
we made her smuggle giant spiders in her back while climbing steep rocks
we made her climb endless steps
we made her climb down unsafe rickety stairs underground
Nevada and Arizona
As previously demonstrated, she is a slow learner because after Hawaii she safely escaped us and got home and then she made the mistake of going to Red Rocks where we put her to work pounding and pulling nails and testing slacklines followed by climbing, multipitch climbing (in the dark), hiking through the desert, soaking in hot springs with deadly killer amoebas, leaping into frigid waters, and so on.
we made her pound in nails at the RRR 'til she had blisters
we made her test slacklines at the RRR
we made her hold a lock off on the wall for 1:21
we made her strain her back while climbing
we made her climb steep sandstone cliffs
we made her climb a multipitch (770 feet high) trad route
including climbing to the top in the cold and dark
we made her hike across the searing deadly desert ...
... while modelling Aarn packs, Sunskis, and Prana
we made her soak in deadly waters
we made her jump off cliffs into icy cold water
we made her climb up slippery wet rusty ladders
it was so hot she had to pour water on her head
(a signature move) to stay alive
Despite all of this she continues on. Usually she is even smiling. She claims to be a bit more like a cat and that numerous lives have been squandered in our adventures. Sometimes it seems like maybe we are killing her after all.
we got her crying (although we might have actually
made her cry - this pic is post eye-drops)
and then we finally got her ... no wait, she is just stretching her hip
we made her surf killer big waves (just joking this isn't Nalumon)
All joking aside, Nalumon might not always be as fast or foolhardy as we are, but she manages to finish and contribute to the adventures. She also puts up with us and especially me - the man shoving the camera into her face even during stressful times (and she usually smiles). Thanks for surviving all our "attempts" and may you survive many more.
