Tom Grundy's Early 2021 in Bishop Page

Here is a page to post a few of the things that I have been up to in early 2021 that don't necessarily merit their own page. Nice sunsets, working on the grape vines, food, etc.

Chinese New Year - cooking dumplings

For Chinese new year Christine came over and we cooked dumplings and chatted. I didn't get any pics of rolling the wrappers, but I am getting better at the technique. We had a mix of pork and chicken dumplings and some cabbage. It was fun and delicious.

Grape Vines - support and pruning

I've had a bunch of grape vines in my yard for years, they supply a lot of delicious seedless grapes, some of which I get to eat (raccoons and birds eat a lot too). Iris helped inspire me to build a higher tier arbor along the Pine Street side of the yard - hopefully this will provide a sheltered and shaded area in the yard and produce more grapes. We shall see. I built it from old telephone pole cross pieces that were salvaged from a fence demolition. Then I managed to pull a long grape vine that had climbed up into my tree and put it across the top. I have another level of wire that I hope to run another vine across when things start growing in the spring. I also pruned a lot of the little shoots on the vines.

Scenic Scenery

The views of the mountains here are often quite spectacular. I still wish I had a convenient hill or tower to get above the trees and power lines. Alas, the Church of Grundy does not have a steeple or bell tower, so I have to telephoto through the maze of power lines or walk to the nearby field.

Snow Fun

We waited a few days after a big snowstorm that reached down to the valley floor before heading up 168 to play in the snow 2 days. We mostly just skinned up the road and slid back down, but did get a little off the road to ski a steeper slope.

Climbing

I did some bouldering and some climbing in the Gorge - mostly putting up new routes at Blocky Top with Erik.

Iris Knee Injury

On the trip to peak 8860 Iris hurt her knee (bicycle crash on the dirt downhill from Silver Canyon). So since that she hasn't been very mobile. She has spent hours on hold with the insurance and knee x-rays and mri. Surgery is scheduled for March 3, down in Orange County, so we will be down there for a while while Sam and Raquel dwell in the Church of Grundy.
